Eileen Riley’s artwork, Anatomy of a Broken Heart, is a vibrant mixed-media collage that explores the theme of overcoming profound personal challenges, both literal and figurative. The piece centers on a mule, symbolizing Riley’s resilience and determination, adorned with elements reflecting her journey. The background, constructed from hospital paperwork—medication warnings, pre- and post-operative instructions, procedure definitions, and mitral valve information—documents her experience with open heart surgery, during which she received a mechanical mitral valve. Interspersed are the last writings of a former friend who caused emotional heartbreak, alongside images of two women on phones, representing gossiping "busy bodies and jealous fools," and creatures symbolizing lurking threats. Objects like eyeballs, binoculars, and a camera signify surveillance, while airplane tickets reflect her arduous journey back to Massachusetts from California after a congestive heart failure diagnosis. The mule is enriched with symbols of hope and recovery: fruits for abundance, butterflies and birds for freedom and beauty, flowers for happiness, angels for guidance, and the Statue of Liberty for New York and liberty. Personal aspirations are depicted with a sailboat and musical instruments, reflecting her love for music and motivation. A pineapple and mirror represent a third eye, inviting viewers to engage with the work. At the mule’s heart, two hearts—one healed, one being sewn by birds—illustrate her emotional and physical mending. Below, strength scriptures on the snout underscore her spiritual solace, weaving a narrative of triumph over adversity.
